I don't have that many urban fiction reads under my belt, but I do know that with that genre, as with any other, great character development, tight plots and the ability to arouse emotion are the things that set a writer apart from the pack. And by those yardsticks, Nako is at the top of her game. I haven't read all her books (there's quite a few if you want to check out her backlist), but I follow her blog, and her posts on social media and am in constant awe at her entrepreneurship.
Besides that, and her obvious talent, here's the biggest thing I respect about her: she is always looking higher, be it through her spirituality, or her yearning to do even better, go farther, and have real impact with her craft well beyond the page. For those reasons, it's going to be super-cool to have Nako join us at Wine with Writers 2019 and get to know her better. But in the meantime, she's answered a few Quickfire Questions for us.
What show on Netflix did you most recently binge watch embarrassingly fast?
I knocked POSE seasons 1 and 2 out in less than a week and that's pretty fast for me considering I write all day every day but everything went on pause. This was one of the best shows I'd ever binged. Thankfully Season 3 didn't disappoint either. I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about ballroom and the epidemic of HIV/ AIDS back in the 80s.
Favorite book you’ve written?
Without further thought, it will have to be Is She The Reason, the length, the cover, the character development, the plot twist and storyline were all random. Not much outlining or thinking went into the novel. I just...wrote. It ended up being my best-seller to date and my biggest accomplishment...to date.
What’s the most crucial thing for a healthy relationship?
HONEST COMMUNICATION. A relationship can't thrive without open and most importantly, honest communication. The truth goes a long way. And without the truth you can't have trust. Without those components a relationship will fail.
What are the most common road blocks that stop people from achieving their dreams?
The inner-voice. I read something on Twitter the other day that read many of us are in the same position because of the voice in our heads. Once we silence the chatterbox, I believe people can thrive and also, achieve every dream that they have.
Okay, so while that was cool, what's even cooler is that Nako has a new release out, 'Carmen: Love Drought Series' (Book 3). This on just dropped, but also check out the other two, 'Mahogany: Love Drought Series' (Book 1) and 'Juice: Love Drought Series' (Book 2).
Check them out, then come to Wine with Writers 2019 to meet Nako in person.
