I have so much respect for historical fiction writers. The discipline that goes into making sure your work has not only emotional resonance, but is true to the era seems like such an enormous task that I get exhausted just thinking about attempting it. So I've always viewed writers like Joan Vassar with a little bit of awe. When Wine with Writers was conceived, I'm not sure much thought was given to Black fiction that incorporates some of our most painful history, like slavery. It's difficult to think about 'love' in that context, but not only does this writer think of it, she communicates it in a stirring and compelling way. Her work reminds us love can and does develop and thrive even during struggle, and love itself can be an act of resistance when you're thought of as less than a man, less than a woman.
For those reasons, having Joan Vassar agree to participate in Wine with Writers 2019, along with fellow writer of historical fiction Piper Huguely was nothing short of a coup. I can't wait to meet them both. For Joan, I'm going to have tons of questions about 'The Black Series' (Nat Turner's son, y'all!) But for now, I'll settle for her answering 5 Quickfire Questions.
If you suddenly found out that your internal monologue for the last week was actually audible, how screwed would you be?
I would be sooooo screwed. Imma stop thinking so fire my ass and put us both out our misery.
What’s the most crucial thing for a healthy relationship?
I think honesty is crucial in a healthy relationship with yourself and the other person.
What technology from science fiction do you wish existed?
I wish I could teleport and miss this traffic. (Atlanta traffic is the worst)
Would you like to see into the future? Why?
Nope. I got enough to worry about. I already have trouble being in the moment.
What’s in your bag/purse?
A small Vaseline, my wallet, my keys and every damn receipt from last week. (don't judge me)
Okay, so ... we're going to have to get more out of her when we meet her in person, because I promise you, I have tons of questions. To join us at Wine with Writers 2019, register here!
